The Seiko x Peanuts collab brings together two iconic elements of the 20th century: the timeless Peanuts comic strip featuring Snoopy and Charlie Brown, originating in the 1950s, and Seiko’s esteemed Seiko 5 Sports range, with a heritage dating back to 1963.

Seiko has crafted two limited edition models as part of this collaboration, each adorned with original comic strip illustrations on the dial and case-back. The chosen artwork for both the Surfboard and Parachute models hails from the birth year of the Seiko 5 Sports in 1963.

Key features of these limited edition timepieces include the use of the Schulz font, the same font employed by Peanuts creator Charles M. Schulz, for the indices and text on the case-back.

The Seiko x Peanuts Collab – Surfboard model, housed in a 38mm case, showcases the Seiko 4R36 automatic movement, displaying day and date functions. Limited to 8,900 pieces, this model is accompanied by a grey and white nylon strap, and it is available for £350.

On the other hand, the Parachute model, slightly slimmer at 36.4mm, also features the Seiko 4R36 automatic movement with day and date indications. Limited to 6,500 pieces, this piece comes with a black leather strap and is priced at £330.

Both watches celebrate the nostalgic charm of Peanuts while incorporating Seiko’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship. These limited edition timepieces are not only a nod to the past but also a unique fusion of pop culture and horology.

The Seiko x Peanuts Collab – The Mod

A client approached us with a pretty standard Seiko Mod request, seeking a smaller and slimmer case for the Seiko x Peanuts collab Parachute Peanuts watch compared to the original SRPK27.

Upon opening the case and examining the dial, hands, and movement, it became apparent that the dial size exceeded the standard dimensions of a Seiko dial. This watch has anextramovement spacer that fit behind the dial around the edge of the standard seiko dial spacer. This posed a challenge in fitting the dial into the desired smaller case. The client was adamant about achieving a fit while preserving the lume on the dial.

Seiko Defect

We also identified a manufacturing defect on the dial of the Seiko x Peanuts collab Parachute Peanuts watch. It was evident that the dial code text on the left side of the 6 o’clock position had not been properly wrapped around a circle during the design process before the dial went to print. Unlike other Seiko dials, where text is uniformly wrapped, in this instance, there was a noticeable oversight.

The text on the left side of the 6 o’clock position appeared wrapped, while the text on the right-hand side was longer and more prominent. This discrepancy suggests a potential oversight during the design phase. While it’s challenging to speculate on the exact cause, it seems that the shorter text on the left might have been overlooked due to the more conspicuous nature of the longer text on the right.

It’s important to note that we are not excusing this manufacturing defect, and we acknowledge it for what it is. As enthusiasts and professionals in the industry, we hope that Seiko addresses such issues in their limited edition collaborations in the future, ensuring a more meticulous design and production process. Quality control is crucial, especially for limited edition releases, and we anticipate improvements in future collaborations from a reputable brand like Seiko.

Back to the Mod

So the question arose: could the dial be reduced without compromising finish or the lume? While we had experience reducing dials by 0.2mm in the past (0.1mm from the radius), this dial required a more substantial reduction of 0.75mm. Not wanting to turn down the request, we conducted tests with old dials to explore the possibility of reducing the dial size while maintaining the factory-finished look.

Fortunately, the tests yielded positive results. We successfully achieved a reduction of 0.75mm on this 1 of 6500 limited edition dial, ensuring it fits seamlessly into the new, smaller case. Our commitment to meeting our client’s requests and maintaining the original aesthetic and functionality led us to overcome the challenge, providing a unique and customized solution for this Seiko Mod project.
